Straight answers. No runaround.

The questions we get most, answered by the people who tune and ship the reels. Can't find yours? Email info@obalus.com — a person answers within about one business day.

Orders & shipping

How fast will my order ship, and when will it arrive?

Orders ship tomorrow. Delivery usually takes 5–10 days after that, and you get a tracking email the moment it leaves. You can check any order at Track your order.

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes — orders of $100 or more ship free, with tracking. Under $100, shipping is calculated at checkout. A pair of reels plus the rod clears the line on its own.

Where is my order?

Open Track your order and enter your order number and email, or use the link in your shipping email. Carriers can take a day to post the first scan, so a label with no movement on day one is normal. If tracking hasn't moved in five days, email info@obalus.com with the order number and we'll chase it.

Do you ship outside the US?

We ship to every US state. International orders are welcome — shipping cost and time are calculated at checkout, and delivery takes longer than the 5–10 days we quote for US orders.

My order arrived damaged, or something is missing.

Email info@obalus.com with your order number and a photo of what arrived. We'll get a replacement moving — no forms, no arguing.

Can I change or cancel my order?

Email us as soon as you can with the order number and what you'd like changed — the hand, the address, the quantity. If it hasn't shipped, we'll do our best to fix it before it goes. If it already has, the 30-day guarantee covers you.

Returns & guarantee

How does the 30-day money-back guarantee work?

You have 30 days from delivery. If the reel isn't for you, email info@obalus.com with your order number, send it back unused in its original packaging, and we refund your original payment once it arrives. Return postage is on you. Arrived damaged or defective? We replace it free — just send a photo. The full terms are on the refund policy page.

How do I start a return?

Email info@obalus.com with your order number and a line about why. We reply with the return steps within about one business day. The reel goes back unused, in its original packaging; refunds go to the original payment method once the return arrives.

What if the reel stops working?

Email us the order number and a short video or photo of what it's doing. If it's a defect, we replace it. If it's a setup issue — brakes, spool tension, line — we'll usually solve it in one reply. Most "broken" reels are a brake dial away from casting right.

The reels

Can I use it in saltwater?

Yes. Both reels are made for fresh and salt water: 12+1 ball bearings and a SIC ceramic line guide. After a salt trip, rinse the reel gently with fresh water — a light rinse, not a pressure hose — wipe it down and let it dry. Jorge killed his first saltwater reel with a hose in Rockport; this is the rule he learned.

Do you make a left-hand reel?

Yes. Every reel comes in right- or left-hand retrieve; pick the hand on the product page. Right hand means the handle is on the right side and you turn it with your right hand; left hand means the handle is on the left. About one in five of our reels goes out left-handed.

Not sure which hand? Get one of each — the pair can be one right-hand and one left-hand reel.

Which reel should I get — Carbonlite or Cobra Strike?

Same body on both: 12+1 ball bearings, 18 lb of drag, 7.8 oz, magnetic brake plus a spool tension knob, SIC ceramic guide, EVA knobs, fresh and salt.

  • Carbonlite, 8.1:1 — fast retrieve. Most bass fishing, topwater, flipping, anything where you pick up line quickly.
  • Cobra Strike, 7.2:1 — a touch slower. Crankbaits and slower presentations.

Not sure? Find my setup takes 60 seconds.

What line should I put on it?

Braid, 15–30 lb for bass and most freshwater. Go 40–65 lb for heavy cover, catfish, pike and inshore salt. Never under 15 lb braid — thin braid digs into the spool and causes bird's nests. The reel also takes mono or fluoro up to 25 lb. Fill the spool to about 1/16–1/8 in below the lip. Our Aqua Weave braid ($34.99) is matched to the reel.

Will it really not backlash?

No reel can promise zero backlash — anyone who says so is selling. What the Obalus does is make it rare: the magnetic brake slows the spool at the end of the cast and the tension knob sets the start. Every reel is tuned before it ships, and the free course shows you the two dials and the thumb. 9 in 10 owners had no backlash on their first trip.

Which rod goes with it?

The ProFishient casting rod ($49.99) — 1.8 m, about 6 ft, matched to the reel. Add it to a pair of reels and the order ships free. Build my setup puts reel, rod and line together with the bundle saving.

Do you make a BFS (bait finesse) reel?

No. Our reels are standard low-profile baitcasters built for bass-weight lures and up. If you throw sub-1/8 oz finesse baits all day, a dedicated BFS reel is the better tool.

I saw a reel called BS2000 — which one is that?

That's the Obalus Cast Master Pro. Current price and stock are on its page.

Buy 1 Get 1 & bundles

How does Buy One, Get One work?

Buy one Obalus reel for $59.99 and the second reel is free — two reels for $59.99, about $30 each. Choose the hand for each reel on the product page. It's our standing offer, not a countdown.

Can I mix right- and left-hand reels in the pair?

Yes. One right-hand and one left-hand reel in the same Buy 1 Get 1 pair is fine. Not sure which hand? Get one of each — the pair can be one right-hand and one left-hand reel.

Link to this answer

What's the catch?

There isn't one. We sell direct, so the second reel costs us parts and a box, not a marketing campaign. The pair still ships tomorrow and still carries the 30-day guarantee.

How do bundle savings work?

Build any bundle from the store: spend $50 on eligible gear and save $10, spend $150 and save $30. The cart applies it for you. Buy 1 Get 1 reels are already two-for-one, so they don't count toward the bundle tiers, and bundle savings don't combine with Buy 1 Get 1.

Link to this answer

Can I use a discount code with Buy 1 Get 1?

No. Buy 1 Get 1 is already the deal, and it doesn't combine with discount codes or bundle savings.

Course & PB Fishing app

What's the free Baitcasting Mastery course?

A free 5-step video course that comes with every reel: setup, casting mechanics, thumb control, brake adjustment, backlash prevention and maintenance. It's actually free — no upsell at the end. Start the course.

What is PB Fishing, and how do I get the free month?

PB Fishing is a fishing app with bite forecasts, species ID and a catch log. Every reel order includes one free month of PB Fishing Premium — iPhone now, Android coming soon. Activate it at PB Fishing × Obalus; it takes about 30 seconds.

About Obalus

Is Obalus a real company?

Yes. Obalus is a Texas company started in 2021 by Jorge Ferral, a fisherman who got tired of paying for the name on the side plate. 94,000+ orders shipped since then, a real person at info@obalus.com, and a 30-day money-back guarantee on every reel. Read the story.

How can two reels cost $59.99 when big-brand reels are $250?

Because about $170 of a $250 reel isn't the reel. It's distributors, retail shelf fees, sponsored pros and TV. We sell direct and skip all of it. Shimano and Daiwa make good reels — we're not arguing with the reel, we're arguing with the brand tax.

Are the reviews real?

The rating on the reel page — 4.8 out of 5 from 183 reviews — is collected from buyers on the reel page. The photos and videos on our pages captioned "Real Obalus owner" are from customers. Where we use a staged photo, we don't call it a customer.

Do you have a phone number?

No phone line. Email is how we do support — info@obalus.com. A person answers within about one business day, and you get the answer in writing with your order details attached.

Where is Obalus based?

Texas. Jorge grew up near Tyler in East Texas and still fishes Lake Fork and the Gulf. The company started there in 2021.
